Ryanair’s chief executive has confirmed his airline is set for an imminent return to Belfast.

Speaking at the annual Dublin Chamber of Commerce lunch in December, the Westmeath native confirmed that he hoped the announcement would come “very soon” and that he envisaged the price of fares falling by as much as 10 per cent in 2016 due to falling oil prices.

The airline, which withdrew from Belfast City Airport in 2010, is tipped to return to Belfast International with industry sources confident that the firm will take over some of the Aer Lingus slots and run a Gatwick service from Belfast International that will compete with EasyJet.
